Background Information

Sepsis is a syndrome characterized by an overwhelming systemic (whole body) response to infection, rapidly resulting in organ dysfunction, and ultimately death. Sepsis is likely to become more prevalent as populations age. The mortality associated with severe sepsis is high, 20-40% of the patients die. Annually approximately 900,000 and 750,000 individuals suffer from severe sepsis in the Europe and in the US, respectively.

sTREM-1

Human Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells-1 (TREM-1) is expressed on the surface of granulocytes and peripheral monocytes and acts as an amplifier of inflammatory responses. Triggering of the receptor will result in the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and the up-regulation of surface activation markers. During sepsis there is a significant increase in the release of soluble TREM-1.
